LaCie 5big 20TB Thunderbolt Storage

As well as announcing the availability of their new limited edition Blade Runner external 4TB hard disk drive designed by Philippe Starck. Lacie has also unveiled their massive 20TB storage devices in the form of the LaCie 5big.

The LaCie 5big builds on the technology from the 2big Lacie storage devices but offers an impressive 20TB of storage starting at $1,200 directly from the LaCie website.

The LaCie 5big features speeds up to 785MB/s thanks to five 7200rpm/64MB cache hard disks preconfigured in RAID 0, within the 5big. The five hot swappable 5big disks enable users to customise their RAID configurations, to create lightning-fast volume with three disks in RAID 0 and a safe volume with two disks in RAID 1 if desired.

Since it's generally overkill to use all five drives in RAID 1, and extremely risky in RAID 0, the best way to use the 5big Thunderbolt is to set up two separate volumes, one with two hard drives in RAID 1 and the other with three drives in RAID 0. You can use the first to store important data and the second for frequently assessed data.
